Hydraulic quick couplings
Quick couplers are the part of a hydraulic system most likely to be operated by someone in a hurry with a wet glove. Spillage, air ingress and wear all concentrate here.
Styles and where each belongs
| Style | Standard | Sealing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 7241-A | ISO 7241-1 Series A | Ball, poppet valves | The common agricultural and construction coupler outside North America |
| ISO 7241-B | ISO 7241-1 Series B | Poppet | The North American interchange standard; the two series are not compatible |
| Flat face | ISO 16028 | Flat, virtually no spillage | Where fluid loss or contamination must be near zero; higher pressure drop |
| Connect under pressure | Various | Pressure-balanced design | Where residual pressure cannot be relieved before coupling |
| Screw / thread-lock | Various | Threaded sleeve | High-pressure and high-vibration duty where a pull-ring could be released accidentally |
Series A and B are not interchangeable
ISO 7241-1 Series A and Series B share the ISO number and share nothing else — the
body dimensions, the ball/poppet arrangement and the valve design differ. A Series A plug will not lock into
a Series B socket. Check which series is on the machine before ordering, and put it on the enquiry.
Configuration checklist
- Style and standard (ISO 7241-A, ISO 7241-B, ISO 16028 flat face, other)
- Coupler (socket) or nipple (plug), or a set of both
- End connection: BSPP, BSPT, NPT, JIC, ORFS, metric, or hose-tail
- Size — typically 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1"
- Seal compound: NBR is standard; Viton or EPDM for high temperature or specific fluids
- Dust caps and plugs, if you need them supplied with the sets
Materials
Zinc-plated carbon steel is the default. 316 stainless for chemical, marine and food-adjacent duty. Brass for air and low-pressure water. If the application involves a specific fluid — phosphate ester, skydrol-type fluids, high-temperature oils — say so: the seal compound matters more than the body material.
